Notes on Dressing the Self I’m Becoming

I used to think of clothes as simple necessities, something to put on before getting on with the day. But I’ve come to see getting dressed as one of the quietest ways we get to know ourselves. Every morning offers a small chance to ask: who am I today, and how do I want to feel?

Style, I’ve learned, is a kind of conversation with ourselves. When we reach for the color we keep returning to, the silhouette that makes us stand a little taller, or the piece that feels a bit bolder than we’re used to, we’re listening to something within. Sometimes it’s a part of us we already know well. Other times it’s a part we’ve kept tucked away, waiting for permission to be seen.

That’s where clothing can be so tender. A favorite jacket can coax out confidence we didn’t know we had. A soft, well-worn sweater can honor the part of us that simply needs comfort. Experimenting with new looks lets us try on different facets of ourselves, gently and without commitment, until one feels like home. It’s a low-stakes way of practicing self-acceptance, one outfit at a time.

Of course, this only works when style is ours. The moment we dress to meet someone else’s ideals, we lose the conversation. The most beautiful outfits aren’t the ones that follow the rules, but the ones that feel true.

So if you’ve ever felt a pull toward something you weren’t sure you could wear, I hope you’ll let yourself explore it. Getting dressed can be an act of self-expression, and sometimes, an act of self-love.
